Polyphasic sleep schedules for better sleep

Polyphasic sleep is a little known sleep schedule technique. This technique is also known as Da Vinci sleep or Ubermann sleep technique. Most of us believe that in order to function effectively we need a minimum of 6-8 hours of continuous sleep. However the principles of the above-mentioned technique contradict this belief. This technique is of the opinion that 2-5 hours of sleep daily is enough. It also suggests that the time you need to sleep can be undertaken in short intervals of 20-45 minutes at a stretch. The Polysomnographic technique coupled with this technique can be used to maximize alertness to relatively higher levels when we are awake. It makes use of the body’s natural biological processes to work within the individual. It is important to note that the alertness levels achieved during this technique are below normal. This schedule can prove detrimental to one’s overall health if employed continuously over a long period of time.

Understanding this sleep technique

The basic underlying theory of this technique is to use sleep as a necessity and not a luxury. Under usual circumstances, when we decide to fall off to sleep, there are various stages that we gradually move into before we actually fall into a deep sleep. However when we are extremely exhausted we tend to skip over these stages and directly move into a deep slumber. Thus we eliminate the wastage of time in actually falling off into a deep sleep and instead directly fall into a deep sleep whenever we need it the most. Those in a crisis situation that requires your constant attention particularly use this technique.

For those willing to try this method for the first time, they often fall into a deep slumber and oversleep for several hours at a time since their internal clock and body mechanisms are not used to this new adaptation. However gradually, over a slow period of time as the body gets used to this new routine, it automatically adapts itself to this technique. This technique should not be overdone or used for prolonged and extensive periods of time as this can result in adverse health effects.
